HOW TO RE-SEAL THE NOTORIOUS SPROCKET FLANGE OIL LEAK;

FOR THE 1966-1979 ENGINES, THERE IS A COUNTER SPROCKET SEAL PRESSED INTO THE FLANGE & A METAL SPROCKET SPACER BEHIND THE SPROCKET. HOWEVER THE SOURCE OF THE LEAK IS USALLY THE 4 MOUNTING SCREW THREADED HOLES.

For the 1980-88 flange/plate, the only seal is on the output bearing itself, which could also be leaking.  There also is a plastic sprocket spacer behind the sprocket.

To seal the area ON ALL 1966-88 ENGINES, FIRST drain the engine oil, then lean the bike over onto it’s left side.

 Next remove the 4 flange screws, sprocket spacer and mounting flange plate.  Next, clean/degrease the screw threads (or replace with NEW screws) and the flange plate, along with the screw holes IN THE ENGINE CASE using q-tips, or something small enough to clean the threads in the case. You can also spray out the screw holes with rubbing alcohol, contact cleaner etc.  The screw holes on the case go straight through into engine case and is the main source of leaks in this area.

 Clean/degrease the engine where the flange plate mounts.  Next, using a hi-temp RTV silicone sealant (permatex brand or similar) spread a very thin film on the flange plate, (and gasket if the engine is a 1979 & earlier) and a dab all around each of the 4 screws threads, then mount the flange using the 4 screws and let cure for 24 hrs. RE-FILL with oil & this should seal the leak.
